From the Reader:
ANIMAL LAW Chicago’s latest entry in the avant-metal sweepstakes is a Cthulhu-oid monster of a supergroup: Blake Edwards, aka Vertonen; Jason Soliday of Behold! the Living Corpse; Gays in the Military vet Geoffrey Alan Guy; and former Flying Luttenbachers and Cheer-Accident mainstay Dylan Posa. They’ve been working on a full-length for a tentative fall release, and their chosen sound is roaring, cavernous, and ominous—like a set of Edgar Allan Poe-model bells being smacked about by Keiji Haino’s head mounted on an ax handle. Soliday’s baritone guitar and Edwards’s artfully violent percussion (which often involves large pieces of steel being brought into sudden contact) do much to give these heavy, heavy tracks their abandoned-factory feel. Plague Bringer headlines, Animal Law plays third, Big Knife goes second, and Al-Thawra opens.

Chris Sienko's Transmission write up for tonight's show:
I heard a sad rumor that the Flowershop (2159 W. 21st Place, at Leavitt north of Cermak) is closing their doors to shows in June. While the Pilsen location may have seemed out of the way to far-north (or suburban) show-comers, the space seemed to kickstart a whole rash of smaller venues in Pilsen and surrounding areas, making the south and west sides of Chicago the hot spots for all manner of neck-snappin' experimental madness. And now, like Sanjuro, the Flowershop is raising an eyebrow, and with a brusque "see ya around," is walking off into the sunset, eh?
Well, not yet.
This Friday (April 25), THRILL to the sight and sound of six hot-roxxs experimental scienticians flexing their musical lab-coats for one more major hoo-rah before the Flower Shop goes back to...well, I don't know. Selling flowers? Before they go, they invited on rather big-name mofo to see 'em off. All the way from Oberlin, Ohio (by way of Ann Arbor, MI), give it up for...
AARON DILLOWAY: Ex-Michigan monster has been in more seminal bands than you care to count. Wolf Eyes, Beast People, Galen, Couch, Nevari Butchers, and now his new all-synth project Spine Scavenger. Usually, a solo set involves some combo of reel-to-reel and/or 8-track tapes, contact mics, and some kind of gnarly juju, seriously. I've had the ground nearly open up beneath my feet and more than a few Dilloway-led sonic exorcisms. Then again, his new project, Spine Scavenger, is synth and delay-heavy, so maybe some of that will make the trip up from Oberlin for this very special and rare appearance.
MAGAS: Also ex-Couch, Jim Magas took his deadly actions in another direction from former bandmate Dilloway, becoming a premier dancefloor killer on such brain-blistering rump-shakers as Friends Forever and Let Me Meet My Accuser. He understands the Roland line of products better than most, and when he tears his shirt off, you can be assured that the party has already started without you.
MARK SOLOTROFF: Bloodyminded, Animal Law, Fortieth Day...all highly recommended live experiences. And also this - music for one human and 6-8 microphones. Let those tonsils shine shine shine...
JASON SOLIDAY: Animal Law's low-end strikes out on his own for a suite of who knows what. Soliday can do it all - bowed cymbal, electronics, bass, 8-bit, circuit-bent. Expect a lot of gear and a lot of power.
CLUB SPOUSE: May very well be the most obscure band on the internet. All searches lead to announcements about country clubs.
PEAKING LIGHTS: Myspace page affiliates them with Reggae (top 8 = all reggae legends with one thing in common: none of them are aware that they're friends with PEAKING LIGHTS), but honestly, I listen to the sample tracks, and all I hear is A.R. Kane. But the good stuff. Seriously...there really is some. See, even Julian Cope knows so!
8 p.m. SHARP cuz of six bands, and $7 suggested donation cuz of six bands. Also, I'm told enigmatically by the promoter to "not to show up late if you are a fan of analogue synth/lo-fi minimal synth, etc." Maybe he's talking about Club Spouse? Maybe a DJ set? Go and see.

Churned up so much heavy shit into the air last night at practice that I woke up with black lung... Serious coughing jag today... good thing ya don't need lungs to play bass...
Looks like Mark is psyching himself up with some Discharge... Over here it's all Gallhammer and Coffins...
Got a mention on Gapers Block:
Of sharks, bongs, and deep fryers
"Must be something in the air...it's a weird one, isn't it? Like the skies are boiling or something. Who's ever heard of 60 degree weather at the start of January?! Like an omen, or a harbinger or something. Something's coming...
Yes, Mr. Narrator, something IS coming. Two somethings, in fact. On a random Tuesday (January 8), with a strangely tepid moisture in the air, you have your choice to two completely incredible concerting opportunities.
Over at Ronny's (2101 N. California), you can thrill to a world of punk/metal extremities, as four of Chicago's finest get your fist to pumpin'. From the furious crust/grind velocity of Al-Thawra to bleak punk noise from the Daily Void, to the bowel-loosening thunder of Bongripper and Animal Law, rest assured that no distortion pedal shall remain unstomped."
and of course, the details:

------------
Animal Law
Animal Law is what happens when five guys who primarily operate within the experimental, noise, and avant-garde rock scenes (Geoff Guy of Sexual Freedom, ex-Gays in the Military; Blake Edwards of Vertonen, Crippled Insectual; Dylan Posa, ex-Cheer Accident, ex-The Flying Luttenbachers, ex-Bobby Conn; Jason Soliday of I Love Presets, Coeurl, Gunshop, Mora; and Mark Solotroff of BLOODYMINDED, The Fortieth Day, ex-Intrinsic Action), combine forces to play some form of laboriously slow, heavy metal dirge. While the band may cringe at the use of comparisons, references have already been made to (early) Swans, Khanate, Bauhaus, Harvey Milk, The Goslings, My Bloody Valentine, Flipper, Saccharine Trust, Einsturzende Neubauten, etc.
The Daily Void
The Daily Void have been culled from the disbanded Functional Blackouts, who over the relatively short while they were performing, created a dense aura around themselves: playing house shows throughout the Mid-West and the like. With the demise of the FBs, Dr. Filth and cohorts sought to continue their legacy of disheveled punk with a slight evolution. The sound of DV is obviously in some way tied to the FBs, but not as fulfilling. It’s still punk and the music still attempts to relate a bleak future through each tune. There is a tangible difference. The same propulsion is present. The band is fast, sloppy and rugged but the sense of experimentation and lack of care is missing. Even their name points to a perception of life that may not result in maximum effort. Where as each FBs’ release moved forward in some way, adding a new layer of post-punk nihilism and noise, this initial release from the Daily Void seems like a step back to a more basic and primordial time. The music is still balls out punk, but doesn’t maintain the urgency that the Functional Blackouts were able to bring to the fore. Identification Code's 11 songs stem from the darkest corners of the human mind, turning it's feeble imagination against itself in a cacophony dread-inducing noise. In doing so, they also form the basis of one of the most exciting punk albums in years and one that's ridiculously difficult to explain in text. The Daily Void's sound can be best described as the ultimate balancing act. Every element of their being is teetering recklessly on the edge between polar opposites and as soon as you get an idea of which side a particular song will plummet into, the balance is readdressed by a violent swing to the other. Imagine, if you will, taking every Rudimentary Peni record ever released, pulling the best bits on each album and then condensing it into one LP and you start to get an idea of what this record sounds like: Absolutely fucking brilliant.
Al-Thawra
A powerful, multi-ethnic Chicago band that combines the crusty punk, grindcore, and hardcore styles of Assuck, Aus-Rotten, Crass, Doom, Discharge, Filth of Mankind, Gauze, Hellshock, Misery, Napalm Death, Nausea, etc., with the Arabic strains of Rachid Taha, Farid Al-Atrache, Munir Bashir, Abdel Halim Hafez, etc. The group also found inspiration in the cult industrial/experimental project, Muslimgauze, as a final touch. Al-Thawra and its members have already received international coverage in articles about taqwacore in such publications as Rolling Stone, The Guardian (U.K.), and Newsweek, for their participation in this emerging global scene.
Bongripper
The heaviest thing to hit Chicago since Oprah. Bongripper plays down-tuned jams so thick it's like trying to shit concrete. The combination of earth-shattering riffs and psychedelic atmospheres will remind you of the time that you dropped acid while listening to your old Black Sabbath records. You know, the time Miles Davis and Tommy Iommi have turned into goats and are sacrificing your soul to Luficer. Sounds something like that.
